Bass requires a bit more skill if you're planning to play by fingers, pick limits you as to what you can learn and what other techniques you can use, like Slap and Pop.
Guitar is somewhat easier as most techniques can easily be picked up after a little bit of practice, like palm-mute, hammer-ons and pull-offs, but you'd need to learn chords.
Also, depends how much of a wimp you are. Bass playing by fingers will make them hurt for a while until your fingertips harden up. It's the same with guitar, only with one hand though. Also, it depends if you're comfortable with the large frets on a bass.
^ agreed cauz i play bass and my fingers basically dont stop hurting...but its really easy, the band im in, the song that we are doing right now the bass is harder than the guitar part though...

I'd definitely go with a guitar. If you play guitar you can also sing along and that's a great feeling even if you suck at singing (like me). You can't really do that with bass, it just doesn't have the rich sound. It's also easier on the fingers. Either way your fingers will hurt at first, but it'd probably hurt much more with a bass.
I'd go with the guitar. Just because I play guitar and I love it.

I love playing guitar<3
It's good because you can always just play a guitar and you have a song for sing-alongs, etc... sometimes a baseline doesnt make the song as familiar

You can teach yourself guitar, but I'd still suggest getting a teacher. My friend tried teaching himself and it didn't really work out.
I think you should go with the guitar, just because it sounds more familiar with the songs you play. And anyways, you said your friend has a bass that you tried, you could always just play a bit on theirs if you want to, right? That way you can learn both.
