Eyes Closed and Perfectly Still
Becca lay on the ground, eyes closed and perfectly still, ignoring everything around her; the lights, the noise, the complete chaos. People were rushing around, to and fro, yelling and calling out; lights were constantly flashing, attracting more attention and no one could work out what had happened; but Becca was oblivious to it all. She just lay there, eyes closed and perfectly still.
Frank ran as fast as he could up to her, ignoring everyone telling him not to and that he wasn’t supposed to. He knelt down beside her.
“Becca?”
She gave no reply.
“Becca, come on. Talk to me, please?” Frank was pleading with her, but she still just lay on the ground, eyes closed and perfectly still.
Frank took her hand in his and squeezed it gently.
“Oh, come on, Becca. Please. At least open your eyes?
“Oh God, I’m so sorry… Please just talk to me? Come on, Becca, come on! You’ve got to talk to me – I love you!” Tears welled in Frank’s eyes, spilling over, running down his cheeks and dropping to the floor.
“Oh, please; I can’t lose you, I won’t lose you.” Frank wiped his eyes and sighed; he didn’t know what to do without her, she was all he had and all he wanted. This could not be the end.
But Becca didn’t talk to him, she didn’t reply or open her eyes; she just lay on the ground, eyes closed and perfectly still, oblivious to it all. Not caring what was going on or who was there or that Frank, the love of her life, was crying right beside her because she couldn’t talk to him. She cared about nothing at that point, she couldn’t care.
Frank stayed by her side for a time, having almost given up – but he still wouldn’t leave her. Not ever. And she said she’d never leave him. She promised him. But here she was, lying on the ground, eyes closed and perfectly still, leaving him. Having left him.
His eyes stung and his heart more than ached – it felt as though someone had punched through his ribcage and was slowly scratching out his heart, relentlessly and mercilessly.
She couldn’t be gone.
She couldn’t.
No.
He wouldn’t believe it.
He couldn’t believe it.
What was he going to do?
How was he going to carry on?
He didn’t know anything that wasn’t Becca; his life before her didn’t bear thinking about, and a future without her would be even worse. Nothing made him happy like she did; the thought of her smile and could brighten the greyest day; her tinkling laugh warmed his insides and gave him butterflies; her soft touch gave him goose bumps of the good kind; and when he was without her, he hurt and he ached and he couldn’t focus because all he wanted was to be with her.
But now he couldn’t be.
She was no longer with him.
It tore at Frank’s soul and he began to play ‘what if’ games; what if he hadn’t have said that? Would she still have rushed out then? What if he’d just told her in the first place? Would this still have happened? What if he’d stopped her storming out? What if he’d kept her there just a minute longer? What if? What if?
“Excuse me, sir,” someone directed at Frank. “We need to take her to the hospital morgue now.”
Frank looked up at them and nodded sombrely.
Becca lay on the ground, eyes closed and perfectly still; she was dead, she was gone.
And Frank was lost.
