Inspired by the Yiruma song of the same name.

Autumn Scene

I kicked, disconsolately, at the rusty, autumn leaves; they crunched and crackled beneath me like the warm, ragged breaths of a fire, but it did nothing to melt the chill that enveloped me. I stared at the people around me, the people I passed and I wondered what their lives were like – I wondered if they knew what I knew. Did they know, like me, what life really was? Did they understand it all? Did they still revel in simple joys like sunrises and home-made baking? Did they know what it really means to be alive?
I think I do. Now. After everything; I think I know.
I sat down on a bench opposite a park and let out a breath that I wasn’t aware I had been holding. As I did so, I felt the pain wash over me again; stabbing at me like a sharp cramp that slowly spreads itself throughout your whole body. I suppressed it with a swift inhale and I kept the air in my lungs as long as I could. I could feel it slowly burn and cloud my mind. The longer it lingered, the longer I wanted it there – anything was better than knowing what I knew.
A child screamed and the haze was filtered from my eyes. She was playing with her brothers and sisters in the leaves. They flew into the air, twisting and turning, blown by the breeze and then settled back down, only to be kicked up again by the gleeful children. They tried to catch the leafy bronze in their hands, to throw them at one another and they tried to stop them falling to the floor, all to no avail. The dying foliage settled against the crisp, wilting grass still. I marvelled at the futility of their game, that they somehow still managed to enjoy. The leaves would always fall to the floor but it didn’t stop the children from trying to keep them up in the air. Perhaps it’s because they don’t know, they haven’t grasped the inevitability of it all – because everything falls eventually – or perhaps they don’t mind. Perhaps they don’t mind… It was a position I couldn’t fathom, because I minded so terribly. It formed part of a path, on which, I had wanted no part and had simply stumbled upon it in my misguided way. It was just a stone’s throw from that inescapable tangle of insight the path led to.
I had to turn away from the children, from their laughter; so innocent and unknowing, I couldn’t bear to think of what the future held for them. I prayed it would not be the future I am in; I prayed it would not be this.
I stood abruptly, and ignoring the scene around me, I walked. I walked as quickly as I could, my footsteps jarring the frozen bones in my body. I knew it was happening again as my pace increased but I didn’t have the strength to fight it this time. My heart thumped with painful ferocity as I ran and ran through the streets, trying to escape something that was inside of me. It felt as though it was pulling me apart, ripping through my skin and bones, tearing me limb from limb, leaving me as with nothing but a barely beating heart.
I ran and I ran, the air in my lungs blazing like the bright full lights of cars at night time, the blood coursing through my veins like a rampant river raging against a dam, its walls shaking and vulnerable. I flew past people and trees and buildings that I should have recognised. I ran until I could no longer see, my eyes full of thick, salty tears that rolled down my cheeks in streams. I collapsed to the floor and felt ragged with sick exhaustion. I wasn’t sure how much more I could take before I fell apart completely.
I sat up and wiped my eyes furiously. I tried to breathe deeply and ignore the pain, but as soon as I looked around me, it was there again.
On the floor, beside a great wood, whose trees had already lost their leaves for winter, I was sat. A mild mist seeped through the thin, bare forest and sat atop the damp, moulding leaves that had turned to a mulched carpet. All of these leaves had long since fallen; the hot, earthy smell of their decay made my nose run but it somehow soothed the burning in my chest. The view was so still and so desolate, so unlike the violent storms of sensation in me. Yet, it was still somehow beautiful in its naked vulnerability – so tragic, lost and lonely. I felt a strange stirring within me, like an affinity with this place. It had lost everything about it that used to make it beautiful; it had lost everything about it that gave it life. It almost looked like it was dying.
And I understood.

'It felt as though it was pulling me apart, ripping through my skin and bones, tearing me limb from limb, leaving me as with nothing but a barely beating heart.'

AVERY rough draft of something much more important.
Names will definitely change.

The Birth and Death of a Day

“This is it,” Alyssa whispered. Her voice was hoarse, her mouth and throat bone dry from the blistering heat.
Xan just nodded, staring into the space the sun would soon fill.
They both slowly stepped from the trees and their feet sizzled on the burning sand of the small beach. Each of them winced as the pain registered, but neither dared to speak, the weight of their task pressing more prominently on their minds.
As the soles of their feet pushed into the sand, grains fell all upon them, spotting the milky-white of their skin with red blisters. They moved slowly, the pain of knowledge worse than anything else they could encounter.
Alyssa and Xan stood, in the centre of the beach, just two feet back from the wet line of the waves and they waited.
Their bodies were dried and cracked all over, their skin flaking as the heat of the nearing sun scorched the surface of everything around it. Sweat trickled from weeping pores and stung as it rolled down the broken defences of their skin. Neither could talk as their lips were so cracked and peeling to do so would be to split them completely.
Besides, words at that point were useless. There were no words, nothing that could be said, that could possibly have affected anything. Nothing could change their future; nothing could explain the way either was feeling, nothing could mean anything.
With the heavy porcelain cradled in her arms, Alyssa’s burden was the heaviest to bear. She knew what would become of her, she knew what would happen, but it was an intelligence she didn’t share with Xan. She knew her role, the part she had to play and it frightened her, so she needed one of them to be strong now. Since she couldn’t be with everything she knew, she needed Xan to stay ignorant and stay strong.
“Xan,” Alyssa croaked. Her lips split and blood began to spill but before it could even reach her chin, it had dried and clotted.
“Xan,” she repeated. “Hold my hand.”
It wasn’t so much a command as a plea. She carefully unlooped one arm and stretched it out to him.
“Just until the waves come,” she continued, salty tears beginning to sting in her eyes.
Xan looked at her and his face, already, was marked with crystal tracks of dried tears.
“Please.”
But no sooner was the word said than his hand was in hers. Goosebumps extended along their arms, though they couldn’t possibly have been cold. Their hands shook in each other’s, knowing that with every second that passed, they were closer and closer to the end.

They looked at each other, each face a reflection of the fear that the other held.
The sun was before them now and they could feel its little arms of fire lick at their arms and legs, their faces and torsos. They began to feel the boiling, molten gold of the sea lap against their toes and the waves soon began to swell against their shins.
All of a sudden, a million thoughts popped into their heads and they had so much they wanted to say to one another. In all their silent minutes of waiting their minds had been calm, pensive, empty, but now, in their last few seconds, torrents of words rained down upon them, dying to get out. They knew they’d not the time, and lamented the absence of speech, but as they looked at each other for the final time, the words were passed. Through whatever ether and whichever space, their words were shared and with not a second to spare.
The waves roared above their heads as the sun touched the sea, and fell down on them, surrounding them with bright, golden water. Their feet were swept from beneath them and they were swirling, swimming, drowning in the water.
Alyssa’s arms tightly clutched the porcelain to her chest as her eyes desperately looked for Xan. Through the empyreal glow that was around her, everywhere, she could not see a thing. This worried her, but not for long, as the porcelain began to slip away from her. She screamed and her lungs filled with sweet, gold sea. Her mind was blank. Everything about her being burnt and her skin was screaming for air, but she felt calm. The porcelain was still at her fingertips so she kicked into the sea and brought it closer. She, once again, pressed it to her chest. A warming sensation tingled there and she almost felt she was dissolving.
As she looked at her arms around the porcelain, she realised at once that she was, and it along with her. She watched her fingers dissipate into golden atoms and a sense of peace overwhelmed her.
This is not how she had heard it happened – flashes of torture and pain came before her eyes – but she was thankful. Her mind clouded before becoming clear like hardened glass.
Her body became one with the sea and one with the sun whilst her soul rose up to join the stars that lit the darkened sky.
The porcelain sent its essence out across the world and the sun stretched to cover it all. All the land and sea was covered, all the people unaware of it.
As the sun enveloped everything that exists, it flashed and everything was gone. There was nothing but darkness and a small star of light at the centre.

Whoa! That was incredible, Jules.
It's so weird. I can't explain it.

You've done a great job of explaining things.
I love the description of the sun.

Thank you
But yeah, as I say, it is definitely a rough draft - I did it during a free just for something to do.
