I love Catcher in the Rye, Fight Club, Brave New World, 1984, The Great Gatsby, Flowers for Algernon, All Quiet on the Western Front. There are probably a few books that I forgot to list.
The Catcher in the Rye and Great Gatsby are my favorites from that list.
I like The Catcher in the Rye because the main character is someone a lot of people can relate too. I like Holden's observations... heh.
Great Gatsby is good too. I like that Nick says in the beginning he's the only honest person he's ever really known. :P And it's sad, how poor Gatsby, gets fucked over by those rich assholes.
Holden as a character is very easy to relate to. He sees that the world is fucked up, though he is kinda paranoid. I really should reread the book.
But I love how it's written. He's surrounded in the whole book by people who aren't like him, it's really existential.
Yeah, it seems like he can never really connect to any of the characters. Except perhaps, his kid sister. The others can't understand him or his actions, think he's a nut, etc.
I never thought of it as existential, but you're right, it kind of is.
Speaking of existential another one of my favorite books is The Stranger, by Camus. Camus once suggested that the only philosophical question that really mattered, was rather or not to commit suicide.
Oh, it's about a guy who shoots an arab and gets put on trial for it, but everyone is more outraged by things like "He didn't cry at his mother's funeral!" than the fact that he killed a man. The main character stays apathetic til the end though. :D
