One
I sat on the sidewalk with my head in my hands and let the salty tears run down my cheeks. I knew that my mascara and eyeliner would run but I didn't care. It was a cold September night in Belleville and I had just run away. Again. I just couldn't take my father anymore so that night I made the descision to hastily pack my bag and get out of the house as soon as I could. Since my mom died a month ago he had become distant and barely noticed he had two daughters anymore. I had nowhere to go, I had no friends, I'd only moved to New Jersey eight weeks ago and I was seen as a reject at school; that loner girl who listened to music all the time. I was the complete opposite to the preppy girls that were everything I loathed, personified.
So, with nowhere to go and no one to turn to, I roamed the streets for a few hours and ended up on the sidewalk, finally letting my emotions overcome me. I just missed her so much...
I was considering moving on from the spot when someone approached me. He was a short guy with messy black hair and piercings in his nose and lip, with the most amazing eyes I'd ever seen. I thought I recognised him but I wasn't sure. Of course, I looked terrible. My long brown hair was hanging around my face and I knew that my eyeliner had been messed up.
"Hey, are you okay? Only, I saw you from across the street and you don't look too good.." he asked and I could see the concern etched on his face.
"Yeah, I'm fine, thanks," I replied with a weak smile. I could tell from the look on his face that he didn't believe me and, if I were him, I wouldn't have either.
"Hmm...well, okay, if you insist..." he began to walk away but turned to me again, "do you wanna get a coffee with me?" he asked with a slight grin. He seemed like a nice guy so I heard myself agreeing to join him. I must be crazy, I thought, I don't even know this guy's name! Almost as if he was reading my mind, he offered his hand to help me up from my sitting position and smiled, "Oh by the way, I'm Frank, Frank Iero."
I took his hand and picked up my bag.
"Hayley Adler," I replied, returning his warm smile.
